How do you do the Voodoo you do so well, Mr. Marz?? Voodoo #1 reincorporates the former member of the WildC.A.T.S. in the DCU New 52 with an intriguing start.
Voodoo is a dancer at the Voodoo Lounge in New Orleans. Her real name is Priscilla, but at this lounge the most popular dancer always takes the name Voodoo and she’s had that name since she arrived.
It’s always the most popular girl that has her enemies; Voodoo has hers in the guise of two government agents who have developed a peculiar interest about her. While she has most men hypnotized by her beauty, partners Evans and Fallon aren’t fooled. They know her secrets and are ready to confront her, but a disagreement between partner’s results in their separation for the evening and an end for one of them.
Ron Marz has said Voodoo is written so you can’t tell if she is a hero or a villain; if judged by the first issue she comes out as a badass bitch, but I have a feeling her lines are going to start to grey as the series moves forward. He has crafted a very entertaining and suspenseful series and if things keep up we’re going to have a roller coaster of a ride.
Sami Basri’s art is cool, crisp and totally sexy. Quite a few New 52 titles have had great stories, but have suffered from iffy art. Voodoo #1 doesn’t have this problem; Basri brings the sexy without making it cheap and all porny. Fantastic!!
All in all, I think Voodoo #1 deserves a 9 out of 10. It was a complete surprise how much I enjoyed Voodoo and cannot wait to read issue 2.
