Growing up I always wanted to be part of the X-Men, believed that the Avengers would come save the day, and thought every bug bite would turn me into the next Spiderman. So many years later understand my surprise when I let myself buy a DC comic (just imagine a strange vileness and shock when I say DC). The first of the new 52 I was told to give a chance was Wonder Women. Now to me Wonder Women has always been this half naked magic being that has a lasso and an invisible airplane, but with no real interesting qualities or edge factor. Let me just say it real quick and all can judge me later, I was under the belief that DC comics were boring, well I was finally proved wrong. The new Wonder Women has a bit of a darker side. The references to Greek mythology as seeing a new rendition to characters like Hermes and Apollo are very fun and interesting.
Art and storytelling all make this comic making me want the next. Brian Azzarello’s story telling ability makes it easy for someone who isn’t a Wonder Women fan to follow and keeps me interested to see what happens in the next panel. The art was fantastic, though if I ever get a chance to speak to Cliff Hiang I am going to have to thank him for giving me nightmares of centaur births. I really like Hiang’s art style I feel that it’s like a mix of kind of old school classic comic art with a modern twist.
The story seems like it is going to open up for something awesome seeing as mythological monsters are now in homes and I am curious to see how they continue with making something new out of a character that has been around since the 40s. Something that I do wish they changed was making it a little easier for people who do not know anything to understand. I lucked out with having people around me who love DC and Wonder Women to help explain some of the important parts of the comic to me and some back story but with out them I would be have been lost. All in all I thought the new Wonder Women comic was awesome and I cannot wait to see what they come out with next.
