I think I can look at Flashpoint: Abin Sur one of two ways. The positive way is writer Adam Schlagman shows us no matter what happens certain events are carved in stone. Then we have the negative way; DC is trying to milk Blackest Night for as much as it can. The skeptic in me wants to think the latter, but I can’t get over how much heart I feel when I read the start of a three issue mini series and that’s with good reason. Adam Schlagman was editor on a significant amount of books in which The Lantern Corps were involved. He’s gone through Blackest Night and Brightest day and now Schlagman is Bringing Abin Sur back to life.
Without giving too much away in Flashpoint Abin Sur is alive, well and Green Lantern of Section 2814. Blackest Night is one of the current threats in the world of Flashpoint with Abin Sur being thrown right in the middle of it. The Guardians reveal to him that there is a White Entity that is the life force of the universe buried in the Earth’s crust and he must go and retrieve it. If he has to destroy the planet, so be it, but make sure the Guardian is kept safe. Sur, being a natural born protector, swears to save The White Entity and keep the populous of Earth alive.
As he heads off we segue over to Green Lantern Thall Sinestro and discover while his Lantern Status never changed to Yellow, he still is a devious son of a bitch. When we come to issues end we’re introduced to Sinestro’s partner in crime who isn’t a wiling participant in the debauchery.
I’m really pleased with Flashpoint: Abin Sur and cannot wait to read the second issue. I think it’s interesting how they were able to weave in current events of the DCU and make them part of this deviation from their current time line. I’m hoping the next three Mini-Series will be just as good.
Onto Flashpoint: Batman, Knight of Vengance.
