Brian Bendis and Mark Bagley have teamed up to bring us their awesome new comic, Brilliant. It’s suppose to be about college age kids that are discovering how to make super powers and the trials and tribulations they go through; maybe it’s just me, but I couldn’t make heads or tails of this book. Seriously I had to stop a few times and re-read to make sure I hadn’t developed dyslexia.
What happens you get a bunch of super smart kids together with low morals?? A bunch of geniuses willing to bend the laws of nature to get what they want. Bendis and Bagley’s Brilliant opens on that very thing, a young man robbing a bank using the power of suggestion; but wait, not only can he tell you what to do he can also bounce bullets off his skin. Super cool, right?
After a dramatic opening we’re treated to a party scene and introduction of character. Here is where I had problems with the book. The story telling seemed jagged and unreadable at times. I had to go back and forth between panels to get the story straight and sometimes Bagley’s art made it hard to tell the difference between characters.
I struggled through, made it through to the end and even though I had difficulty getting there I will give the next issue a try. I’m always up for a good College Geniuses get corrupted because they are too smart, but if the next issue is as disjointed as the start I’m just going to drop it.
I give this a disappointing 4 out of 10!!
