Grant Morrison has recently put out some creative work for DC Comics with Batman, but with the release of the new 52 DC has given Morrison a revisit their iconic DC character, Superman. As someone who really likes Morrison’s Batman run, but who isn’t a Man of Steel fan I was really intrigued by what Morrison would bring to Metropolis. All of the hubbub centered around Clark Kent’s new costume, I believe the excitement about new Superman content got lost in the shuffle. Since it was a #1 issue I wasn’t expecting a lot of drama in this week’s Action Comics #1, boy was I surprised.
Of all the new 52 issues released (and I’ve read them all) Action Comics #1 is the best. The importance of the book, combined with being written by Grant Morrison and the fantastic artwork by team Rags Morales and Rick Bryant backs up DC’s insistence that this is the book to read for the new 52. The book introduces new readers to all the major players in Metropolis while providing an exciting fast paced story that shows the depth of Superman’s powers and also Lex Luther’s cunning. It also sets up the next few issues quite well, which is very important for DC. For the seasoned Superman reader, this issue will still be fun. The new costume looks very sharp and the book contains quite a bit of compelling action. The pages themselves are great to look at and the artwork for the city of Metropolis is stunning.
Last week’s Justice League got the new 52 off to a great start and Action Comics #1 is continuing that momentum. The book looks and reads great and is set to be one of the cornerstones to the new DC universe. Morrison was definitely the right choice to be at the helm of such an important book and his proven track record makes me very excited to see what’s in store for Superman.
The book is definitely worth reading and has earned a glowing 8 out of 10.
