Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #1

Mission accomplished. The first issue of ‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles’ does exactly what IDW had hoped to do with the book and sets up the series very well. Starting with page one readers will be treated to some good old-fashioned ninja fighting and it doesn’t slow down from there. Every page is full of excitement as well as a work of art. The creative team of Tom Waltz and Dan Duncan does a superb job by using the art style to accompany Eastman’s edgier content. The book is a long way a way from some of the newer TMNT cartoons and as an older reader I appreciate that, these are the turtles I grew up with. Sprinkled with flashbacks, the issue itself flows well and sets up two story arcs for the next few issues.

Everybody’s favorite mutants are back, and no I’m not talking about Xavier and company I’m talking about the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Today the first issue of IDW’s newly rebooted turtles series hits shelves with a resounding cowbunga dude! Written by Kevin Eastman IDW is looking to make a splash with the hero’s in a half shell all while bringing Splinter and the gang back to their roots as an action comic with a bit of edge.

‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles’ has a lot of potential. The next few issues will really dictate where the series is going to go, but after reading the first issue id say TMNT is in good hands with this creative team. That potential combined with the amazing value of grabbing a book that has very little add space in it and there’s no risk in giving it a shot. The edgier tone makes the book enjoyable for older readers, but it’s not so edgy that the younger generation cant read it too. I’m really looking forward to the next few issues to see how the series takes shape but id say IDW’s got a winner.

A really solid 7 out of 10 stars.
